Isolation and phylogenic analysis of emerging new antibiotic resistant bacteria, Acinetobacter lwoffii, associated with mortality in farmed rainbow trout

Authors

Abstract:

Whereas it is well documented that the genus Acinetobacter is associated with antibiotic resistant bacteria and human clinical infections, there are very few studies to date that report it as an emerging new pathogen for fish. In the present study, Acinetobacter lwoffii was isolated from diseased rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from Iranian farms, in the Khuzestan Province by both biochemical tests and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based methods and further confirmed as the causative agent by infectivity experiment. Uni or bilateral exophthalmia, blackening of the skin, abdominal distension, hemorrhages around the mouth cavity and eyes, basal fine, skin, gills and in internal organs were the main clinical signs in the affected fish. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA sequence of MD77 revealed a 99% homology with that of A. lwoffii (GenBank accession no.KR856323.1) form Iran. Histopathological changes of challenged rainbow trout including focal necrosis of liver cells (hepatocyte), pyknotic nucleus and karyolysis of hepatocyte, hyperemia, fatty acid composition change of liver, infiltration of inflammatory cells, sinusoidal dilatation and congestion. The drug resistance of isolates and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was examined and showed that A. lwoffii was multiresistant to 8 of the antimicrobial agents tested..

Public Health Implications of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Associated with Suya Spices in Nigeria

Background: The emergence and re-emergence of antibiotic-resistant foodborne bacteria call for concerted efforts, especially in developing countries. Spices have been employed traditionally to improve the aroma and flavour of foods; however, they could  serve as reservoirs for the spread of potential pathogenic organisms. This study aims to investigate the public health implications of antibiot...

Antibiotic residuals in some farmed rainbow trout(Oncorhynchusmykiss) of market size in Iran

To assess the hygienic conditions of market rainbow trout (Oncorhynchusmykiss ), the residuals of three antibiotics consisting of oxytetracycline (OTC), enrofloxacin (EN) and erythromycin (ET) were measured in the muscles of freshly caught fish obtained from 17 trout farming in Charmahal-va-Bakhteyari (CVB) province using high performance liquid chromatography. Totally 266 fish samples w...

Antibiotic Resistant Salmonella and Vibrio Associated with Farmed Litopenaeus vannamei

Salmonella and Vibrio species were isolated and identified from Litopenaeus vannamei cultured in shrimp farms. Shrimp samples showed occurrence of 3.3% of Salmonella and 48.3% of Vibrio. The isolates were also screened for antibiotic resistance to oxolinic acid, sulphonamides, tetracycline, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, norfloxacin, ampicillin, doxycycline hydrochloride, erythromycin, chloramp...

Meat Quality of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Brown Trout (Salmo trutta fario) Farmed in Bulgaria

Background: Fish meat is outlined with high nutritional value having essential amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids, mineral and vitamins. In this short report, we compared the meat quality of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) farmed in Bulgaria. Methods: Ten fishes from each species were purchased from a fish farm and their morphological parameters were ...
